The ADFS 2.0 Attribute Store for Forefront Identity Manager Test Client

This is typically where you should start becuase it'll help you getting the FIM connectivity right and also help you get your XPath questions agains FIM correct.
The test client uses the attribute store under the hood for FIM connectivity and the only differences from querying FIM with the test client compared to using ADFS is that you'll have to specify connection parameters in the test clients config file and that the calling user will be the user you're currently logged in as instead of the ADFS service account

Before you start I'll recommend you to read the FIM XPath Dialect Reference: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee652287.aspx. This will give you understanding on how queries to FIM could and should be expressed.

The Event Source Utility

Before the attrbute store (and also the test client) can be used you'll have to register the Cortego.ADFS.FIMAttributeStore event source. If you don't do this you may end up with nasty errors since it's not able to write to the event log. Remember that the event log is your friend and that it'll help you get the attribute store up and running.
